Case Study: Strengthening Lockout/Tagout Practices at a Mine in Northern Canada

Facing challenges related to the control of hazardous energy, site personnel at a mine in Northern Canada identified the need to strengthen their lockout/tagout practices to improve the safety of work performed on critical equipment.

To support this initiative, SPI Health and Safety was engaged to provide lockout/tagout training on key safety principles, as well as technical consulting services aimed at improving and enhancing the organization's overall lockout/tagout program.

The project took place in a particularly demanding environment. Located in Northern Canada, the mine presents several operational challenges, including equipment spread across a vast territory, temperatures that can drop as low as -55°C, demanding work schedules, and a high-density heavy industrial environment.

The project brought together several stakeholders, including the client's health and safety representatives and managers, workers from various operational departments, and SPI Health and Safety's lockout/tagout specialist.

Thanks to a dedicated block of consulting hours and close collaboration with on-site teams, the project evolved into a comprehensive continuous improvement initiative for the mine's lockout/tagout program.

Key deliverables included:

  • Training workers on lockout/tagout principles and best practices.
  • Developing and updating equipment-specific lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Conducting field audits and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Supporting various departments in identifying solutions to improve safety of infrastructure and equipment.
  • Collaborating with the training department to update internal training materials and the site's lockout/tagout program.
  • Designing and implementing a lockout/tagout station tailored to operational needs.
  • Selecting and sourcing specialized lockout/tagout devices adapted to the realities of mining operations.
  • Providing ongoing technical support and guidance to workers and supervisors as a lockout/tagout subject matter expert.

The project delivered the following results:

✅ Improved worker knowledge and competency in lockout/tagout practices.
✅ Development and enhancement of lockout/tagout procedures for critical site equipment.
✅ Standardization of practices and procedures across multiple departments.
✅ Strengthened internal lockout/tagout program and training content.
✅ Implementation of tools and infrastructure that support the consistent application of best practices in the field.
✅ Reduced risks associated with hazardous energy interventions.
✅ Long-term reinforcement of the organization's safety culture.

This project demonstrates that an effective lockout/tagout program goes far beyond regulatory compliance. It requires an integrated approach that combines training, field support, continuous improvement of procedures, and close collaboration with workers to develop solutions tailored to the operational realities of the site.

WHAT PPE IS USED IN THE MINING INDUSTRY?

The personal protective equipment required in a mine depends on the hazards present, the tasks being performed, and site-specific requirements. Depending on the work environment, mining workers may require the following types of PPE:

Head Protection

Safety helmets and accessories suited to workplace hazards and conditions.

Foot Protection

Socks, insoles, ice cleats, and safety boots designed for demanding mining environments to help protect against impact, puncture, slip, and other hazards.

Hearing Protection

Earplugs, earmuffs, and hearing conservation solutions designed for high-noise environments.

Respiratory Protection

Disposable and reusable respirators, powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs), self-contained and closed-circuit breathing apparatus, and refuge scrubber units.

Hand Protection

Gloves designed to protect against cuts, impacts, abrasion, chemicals, and other workplace hazards.

Protective Clothing

High-visibility and specialized protective clothing suited to site conditions.

Fall Protection

Safety harnesses and miner's belts designed to help protect workers when there is a risk of falls

Lighting and First Aid

First aid kits, emergency equipment, flashlights and headlamps, batteries, and more.
