Training saves lives
On August 16, 2012, Lawrence Davis finished his first day of work at the Bacardi plant in Jacksonville, Florida. At only 21 years old, he hoped this job would mark the beginning of a long career. But while he was performing maintenance under a palletizer, another employee unintentionally activated the machine. Lawrence was crushed to death.
He had received no training
Bacardi had not provided temporary workers with any training on the hazards present in the facility or on lockout procedures to prevent unexpected start-ups. This omission is illegal, as every employer has the obligation to eliminate or control risks to protect the health and safety of their workers. This duty applies in both the United States and Canada.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had no choice but to find Bacardi guilty of 12 violations and impose a fine of USD 192,000.
Preventable deaths
Every day across North America, workers lose their lives in similar circumstances. Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who were simply doing their jobs. What makes these tragedies even more devastating is that many of them can be prevented, as highlighted by the U.S. government.
