Coated gloves or leather gloves? The new Kosto gloves are perfect for the summer season

SPI3/1/2022

There are many different types of gloves available offering protection against a great variety of hazards. Selecting the right pair of gloves must be based on the tasks to be carried out and the potential hand injuries.

It is essential that workers use gloves specifically designed for the hazards and the tasks identified in the workplace, as they are designed for a specific function. They may not be used for a different task, even if they seem to provide the appropriate protection.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLOVE?

Here are a few examples of factors that may influence the selection of protective gloves according to the type of work to be performed:

• Type of chemical product to handle
• Nature of the contact (total immersion, splashes, etc.)
• Duration of contact
• Area needing special protection (hand only, forearm, arm)
• Grip requirements (dry, wet, oily)
• Thermal protection
• Size and comfort
• Abrasion and resistance requirements

FOR THE SUMMER SEASON, WILL YOU WEAR A COATED GLOVE OR A LEATHER GLOVE?

Leather glove

Leather gloves are usually used to provide protection against cuts, abrasions, and burns.

Alteration tolerance varies according to the leather, but overall, they are very durable and comfortable to wear. Excellent choice for handling sharp objects, leather gloves also protect against sustained heat, sparks, shocks, chips, and rough objects.

Nitrile-coated gloves

Nitrile offers superior resistance to snags, pinholes, abrasions, and cuts, and contains no latex allergens. Much cooler than traditional leather gloves, it is also an ideal option for the summer.

Providing an excellent grip and machine washable, the unreinforced nitrile offers an exceptional combination of puncture and chemical resistance. It will not weaken or swell like rubber (latex) or neoprene when working with most solvents and animal fats.

By coating the other side with polyurethane, the gloves become general use protection with slip resistance and superior dexterity. These gloves can be used to handle bricks, metal threads or chemical or laboratory containers.

When selecting gloves for protection against chemical exposure, it is important to always validate with the manufacturer or review the documentation to ensure the effectiveness of the glove protection against the chemical products used.

Polyurethane-coated gloves (PU)

Polyurethane is primarily used as a coating on knitted gloves. It provides great dexterity, softness, and strength all wrapped up in a comfortable adjustment.

It is resistant to oils, solvents, fats, gasoline, and much more. Many polyurethane-coated gloves offer protection against cuts and minor abrasions.

Care for your protective gloves

Protective gloves must be inspected before each use to make sure they are free of tears or punctures or if rendered ineffective.

A visual inspection will help the detection of cuts and tears, but it is possible to perform a more in-depth inspection by filling the gloves with water and firmly rolling it toward the fingers. That way, it is easier to detect even the smallest leaks invisible to the naked eye.

Discolored or rigid gloves can indicate damages caused by excessive wear or degradation caused by chemical exposure. All damaged gloves must be discarded and replaced. Taking into account the absorption quality of certain gloves, reusing gloves resistant to chemical product gloves must be carefully evaluated.

The toxicity of chemical products, the length of exposure, and storage conditions are key criteria to take into account when deciding to use gloves exposed to chemical products.

Cleaning

Leather gloves:

  • It is generally recommended to dry clean leather gloves. Soap and water wash away the natural oils found in the leather, making them still and weak.

Coated gloves:

  • Use cold water: 85°F/30°C or less
  • Use a mild detergent
  • Tumble dry at low temperature or without heat
  • Bleach is not recommended
