Tier II cities beckon IT


Did you know that over 50% of engineers in Karnataka come from secondary cities? There cannot be a better justification to take IT to Tier II cities in Karnataka and the department of IT chose to say exactly this.

In a seminar to share the success stories of those IT companies that have made it big in secondary cities like Vijawada, Mysore and Mangalore, IT and BT secretary M K Shankarlinge Gowda said the abundant churn out of engineering graduates in secondary cities is reason enough to take IT to their doorstep.

“Over 50% of the engineers from Karnataka come from outside Bangalore. Today we have reached a stage where IT must be taken to all these places fro overall economic development,” Gowda said.

Former chief secretary BS Patil who is presently driving the initiative to bring more IT and ITeS companies to Hubli-Dharwad said that these locations produce over 50,000 graduates every year, besides 2,402 post-graduates and PhD holders per year.

After comparing this location with Bangalore along with key parameters like real estate cost, land availability among others, Patil said that his organization (BIC society is presently facilitating the setting up of a finishing school to ensure that 5,000 graduates could meet industry requirements by 2007.

Mysore, which is fast gaining the attention of IT and the ITeS space was showcased by Sid Mookerji, CEO of Software Paradigms India. Sharing experiences of his organization. Mookerji highlighted the ease with which industries could set up shop in Mysore.
